FAQs

How do I get on a team?

When are the games?

Games are played late evenings (9:30, 10:00, 10:30, 11:00pm) on all days of the week except Sundays. Each team plays around 5 times per month, with a total of 28 games per season (PLUS playoffs).

How much does it cost to play?

See Registration Information.

I'm not a student, can I play?

Yes.

What is the skill level?

There are talented players, experienced players, average players, and beginner players. There are four divisions to keep the competion level close. There truly is room for players of all skill levels. If you only wish to play at the top level, indicate division 1 on your registration. If you are inexperienced, and concerned with getting out-played, select Division 4.

Where do we play?

Games for Kelowna-based teams are held at Capital News Centre, and Rutland Arena. For Kelowna-based teams there are rare games at Winfield arena, and Royal Lepage Place on the Westside. Our Winfield and Westside teams play nearly all of their games at their home arenas.

I'm a beginner, is there any help for me?

We've developed a beginner's hockey program. Instruction is given in classes on each of the elements of ice hockey, and you can hone your skills against other beginners. Check out the OCHL Academy for details.

Are the games refereed?

Yes.

Why does it cost hundreds of dollars less to play in the OCHL than in any other league?

The OCHL is geared towards students, and student budgets. In the belief that we can provide the best experience by having a larger pool of players, we have made registration accesible to the greatest number of players possible.

I have transportation issues - can I email the League Manager for help?

No. It is players' responsibility to get themselves to and from games. Don't ask us to handle your transportation problems. We provide the ice, your teammates, your opponents, referees, and scorekeepers. Work out your own ride.

What is your refund policy?

Please read our Refund Policy

I don't have a credit card, how can I pay?

We also accept payments by direct debit. Select this option when registering, and you will be prompted to accept a direct debit agreement, and enter the bank account numbers from the bottom of your cheque. We do not accept cash or cheques at the rink.

In July 2008, we began offering affordable OCHCo Financing payment plans, where your fees are spread out in payments of $44.69 over 12 months. Your bank account is automatically debited every month. OCHCo Financing is the perfect solution for those who would have difficulty paying all their fees up front.

What does the job of Team General Manager entail?

General Managers are playing members of each team who are responsible for drafting and trading players, selecting Captains/Alternate Captains, choosing a jersey, name, and logo, etc. General Managers meet a few times during the season with the league to refine the playing and draft rules. It is not a paid position. If you are interested, all you need to do is to check the "Are you interested in managing a team?" box when you register (or contact us). A General Manager should be assertive, have a knowledge of hockey and be motivated.

I have anger management issues, truly believe that the referees single me out every game, and think that the rules don't make sense, so I won't bother respecting them. Will this be a problem?

Please enjoy your time playing elsewhere. We don't want you, and once your nature comes out, you will be refunded (provided you haven't yet been kicked out for something serious), asked to leave, and told not to come back. Yes, we can, will do this, and have done this. We aren't paid to babysit people with discipline problems, and you really are ruining it for everybody. If you are in the 1% of players that will have a problem with just enjoying the game, please don't sign up.

Draft questions (View draft rules)

What is the draft?

The draft is an exhibition game played between new players to the league. General Managers, and their assistants from each team watch the new players play and select players to their team in order of preference. It is a way to make each team as competitive as possible by spreading the talent around fairly.

No one is left out. Everyone is assigned to teams.

Do I have to go through the draft each year?

No. once you are on a team, you stay on it unless you are traded, or have let your registration elapse more than one year.

I want to play on the same team as a friend, do I have to go through the draft?

Yes. The purpose of the draft is to make sure that the skill level is even between the teams. Anyone who doesn't skate during the draft has to be assigned to a team randomly. This is to make sure that skilled players don't skip the draft to cheat the system and end up on a team they want. It wouldn't be fair for someone to go straight to a team without other teams getting to pick.

While it frequently happens that players who have requested to play together do end up together, it is possible that you and your friend may end up on seperate teams.
