Overview
Development in Strides is a specialized hockey program developed by the Oshawa Community Hockey League (OCHL) to introduce children aged 6 to 10 with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to the sport of hockey. The program is thoughtfully designed to provide a supportive environment where participants can build hockey skills, social interaction, and self-confidence.


Target Audience

The program serves children aged 6-10 who have been diagnosed with ASD. These children often experience unique social challenges, and Development in Strides offers a structured, team-based activity that supports the development of social and communication skills.


Program Operation

  • Location: Delpark Arena, Oshawa

  • Season: October to March

  • Participants: Limited to 72 children, divided into 6 teams

  • Enrollment: First-come, first-served

  • Instruction: Led by certified coaches trained to support children with ASD


Program Structure

Development in Strides uses a comprehensive, child centered approach that includes:

  • Equipment Familiarization: Helping children get comfortable with full hockey gear

  • Skill Development: Teaching core hockey skills—skating, stick-handling, shooting—in a fun, low-pressure setting

  • Social Interaction: Promoting teamwork and communication through structured group activities

  • Safety and Fun: Ensuring a safe environment where children can enjoy themselves and feel supported


To Participate 

  • Have a confirmed ASD diagnosis

  • Can tolerate full equipment

  • Are able to follow simple instructions
